What Is Supabase?

Short answer

Supabase is an open-source alternative to Firebase that gives you a PostgreSQL database, built-in authentication, file storage, and real-time data subscriptions through a single hosted platform. It is designed for developers who want the power of a relational database without managing their own infrastructure. Because it is based on standard PostgreSQL, you can write regular SQL queries and apply any Postgres extension. Supabase can be self-hosted or used as a managed cloud service.

Supabase is an open-source backend platform built on PostgreSQL, offering a database, authentication, storage, and real-time subscriptions in one place.

The core components of Supabase

Supabase bundles several services that you would otherwise have to set up and maintain separately:

PostgreSQL database: The foundation of Supabase is a full PostgreSQL instance. You have access to every Postgres feature: relations, indexes, views, functions, triggers, and the entire library of extensions including pgvector for AI similarity search.

Authentication: Supabase Auth handles email/password login, magic links, OAuth providers (Google, GitHub, Microsoft), and phone authentication. It integrates directly with Row Level Security so that the authenticated user’s identity is available inside your database policies. Read more about how authentication works in web applications in our article on authentication in web applications.

Storage: The storage service lets you manage files (images, documents, videos) with the same access-control model as the database. Files live in buckets and you can apply policies to control who can read or write them.

Real-time: Supabase exposes a WebSocket-based real-time layer that lets your frontend subscribe to changes in database tables. When a row is inserted or updated, connected clients receive the update instantly.

Edge Functions: You can deploy serverless TypeScript functions close to your users for custom server-side logic that does not belong in the database.

Row Level Security: why it matters

One of Supabase’s most important features is its approach to security. Row Level Security (RLS) is a native PostgreSQL feature that lets you define access policies at the table level. A policy might say: “a user can read this row only if the user_id column matches their authenticated user ID.”

This shifts access control from the application layer (where it is easy to introduce bugs) to the database layer (where it is enforced for every query regardless of which client sends it). For multi-tenant applications in particular, RLS is a powerful way to ensure tenants cannot see each other’s data without relying solely on application-level checks.

When to use Supabase

Supabase is a strong choice when:

  • You are building a web or mobile application that needs a backend quickly
  • Your data is relational, meaning it has clear entities and relationships between them
  • You want to avoid writing and maintaining your own authentication system
  • Your team knows SQL or is willing to learn it
  • You want the option to self-host or export your data without a migration nightmare

It is less suited for applications that need a document-oriented data model, complex server-side logic that exceeds what edge functions can handle, or scenarios where your team has an existing managed database they prefer.

The managed service vs self-hosting

Supabase offers a generous free tier on its hosted cloud service, which is the quickest way to get started. The free tier includes a PostgreSQL database, authentication, and storage with reasonable limits for small projects. Paid plans scale based on compute and storage usage.

Self-hosting is fully supported via Docker Compose. This is a valid path for teams with compliance requirements or who want full control over where their data lives, though it comes with the overhead of managing the infrastructure yourself.

Supabase in the context of modern app development

Supabase pairs well with API-driven architectures and frontend frameworks like Next.js, SvelteKit, or React. Its auto-generated REST and GraphQL APIs mean you can query your database from the frontend without writing a custom API layer for basic operations. For custom logic, you use the edge functions or trigger database functions directly.

Our tip: Enable Row Level Security on every table from the start of your project, even if the policies are simple. Adding RLS to a production database after the fact is significantly more work than designing your access model upfront.

Frequently asked questions

Is Supabase really open source?

Yes. The Supabase core platform, including the database layer, authentication service, and storage API, is open source and available on GitHub. You can self-host the entire stack using Docker. The managed cloud service on supabase.com is a commercial offering built on top of the same open-source code, which means you are not locked into the hosted version if your requirements change.

How is Supabase different from Firebase?

Firebase is a proprietary platform from Google that uses a NoSQL document database (Firestore) and a real-time database. Supabase uses PostgreSQL, which is a relational database, meaning you work with tables, rows, foreign keys, and SQL. This makes Supabase a better fit for structured data with relationships. Firebase has a wider range of hosted services including push notifications and analytics, while Supabase focuses on the core backend primitives.

What is Row Level Security in Supabase?

Row Level Security (RLS) is a PostgreSQL feature that Supabase uses heavily for access control. Instead of writing authorization logic in your application code, you define policies directly on the database tables. A policy might say: a user can only read rows where their user ID matches the owner column. This means that even if your application has a bug, the database enforces access rules, reducing security risk.
