AI Features in Power BI: What's Possible?

Short answer

Power BI includes several AI features: Q&A lets users ask questions in plain language and receive a chart as the answer; Smart Narratives generates automatic text summaries of report data; Anomaly Detection highlights unusual data points on line charts automatically; Key Influencers shows which factors drive a specific metric; and Copilot (requires Fabric capacity) can create report pages and write summaries from natural language descriptions.

Power BI includes several built-in AI features that go beyond standard charts: Q&A, Smart Narratives, Anomaly Detection, Key Influencers, and Copilot. Here is what each one does and when to use it.

Q&A: ask questions in plain language

The Q&A visual lets users type a question in natural language and receive a chart or number as an answer. You type “total revenue by region last year” and Power BI interprets the query and renders a visual. You can add Q&A to any dashboard or report page. It requires well-labeled table and column names to work accurately: if your model uses technical abbreviations the AI cannot interpret, Q&A returns poor results. You activate it by inserting the Q&A visual from the visual pane. It works best for ad hoc exploration by users who do not know how to build their own visuals.

Smart Narratives: automatic text summaries

Smart Narratives generates a text paragraph that summarizes the key findings from a visual or the entire report page. It updates automatically when the data refreshes or when a filter changes. You insert it like any other visual. It reads well for simple metrics but tends to produce generic text on complex models. Use it for executive summaries and overview pages where the narrative does not need to be precise to the decimal.

Anomaly Detection: spot unusual data points automatically

The Anomaly Detection feature adds a layer to line charts that automatically highlights data points that deviate from the expected pattern. Power BI models the expected range and marks anything outside it as an anomaly. You enable it through the Analytics pane on a line chart. It is useful for monitoring KPIs over time, such as sales volume or website traffic, where you want to flag drops or spikes without setting manual thresholds.

Key Influencers: understand what drives a metric

The Key Influencers visual analyzes your data and surfaces the factors that most strongly correlate with a chosen metric. Select a metric like “customer churn” and the visual shows which variables, such as contract type or support ticket count, have the strongest relationship. It is an explanatory tool, not a predictive one, but it helps analysts and business users form hypotheses quickly. You find it in the visual gallery under the AI visuals section.

Copilot: create and summarize reports

Power BI Copilot requires a Fabric capacity licence or a Power BI Premium Per User licence. With it, you can describe a report in natural language and Copilot creates a starting layout. You can also ask Copilot to write a summary of a report page, which it generates as a text visual that updates with the data. Copilot works best on well-structured semantic models with clear naming conventions.

For more on using AI tools effectively, see how to write effective prompts for work: the same principles that make prompts work in ChatGPT also apply to Copilot in Power BI.

Our tip: Before enabling Copilot, clean up your table and column names in the semantic model. Copilot relies entirely on those names to understand your data. A column named “Rev_Amt_Adj” gives Copilot nothing to work with; “Adjusted Revenue” does.

Frequently asked questions

Is Copilot in Power BI available with a standard Power BI Pro licence?

No. Power BI Copilot requires either a Microsoft Fabric capacity (F64 or higher) or a Power BI Premium Per User licence. Standard Power BI Pro does not include Copilot. The other AI features, including Q&A, Smart Narratives, Anomaly Detection, and Key Influencers, are available with Power BI Pro.

How accurate is Q&A in Power BI?

Q&A accuracy depends heavily on how well your data model is labeled. If your tables and columns have clear, descriptive names, Q&A works well for common questions. If your model uses abbreviations or technical codes, Q&A will struggle to interpret them. You can improve Q&A by adding synonyms in the Q&A settings and by reviewing the questions users actually ask to identify gaps.

What is the Key Influencers visual and how does it work?

Key Influencers analyzes your dataset to find which variables most strongly correlate with a metric you choose. You select a measure like 'customer churn' or 'order value' and the visual computes which other fields in your model have the strongest statistical relationship with it. It is an exploratory tool that helps analysts form hypotheses, not a predictive model that makes forecasts.

Can Smart Narratives replace a written report summary?

Smart Narratives can replace a basic summary for straightforward metrics. It generates text that automatically updates when data refreshes or filters change. However, for complex analyses that require business context, interpretation, or nuance, human-written narratives are still more useful. Smart Narratives works best as a starting point or as a live summary on an overview dashboard.
